Testing Your Fibre Speeds

This guide outlines how to test the speeds of your connection.

We recommend testing on multiple devices via multiple connection methods as both of these factors can affect the results of a speed test. The more results you have to compare, the better an understanding you can gain of your connection's speeds.

Before undertaking a speed test, please ensure you are connecting directly to your router and that any extenders or other routers are switched off.

We have found the most accurate speed test to be Speedtest by Ookla (app available for mobile devices) and recommend using this if possible.

Please note that speed test results can be affected by the capabilities of the device and means of connection in use.

Devices may have different limitations depending on their networking hardware and age; Ethernet cables similarly have certain limits, and WiFi connections can be affected by interference from other electronic devices.

Hardwired Speed Test

A hardwired test can provide the most accurate results providing your device and Ethernet cable are capable of reaching the speeds for your package.

To carry out a hardwired speed test:

  1. Navigate to your desktop/laptop device and connect an Ethernet cable from your device to a yellow port on the back of your router
  2. Ensure your device is not using a WiFi connection as opposed to the Ethernet connection
  3. On your device open a web browser such as Google Chrome and navigate to "Speedtest by Ookla"
  4. Ensure that no other device is running any downloads/uploads in the background to ensure the best results
  5. Click the "Go" button and wait for the results to be shown on the device

5GHz WiFi Speed Test

Your 5GHz WiFi (WiFi name ending "5G") is capable of delivering high speeds to devices close to the router. This is a newer technology that some older or "basic model" devices may be unable to see.

To carry out a 5GHz WiFi speed test:

  1. Pick up your mobile phone/tablet/laptop and get as close to your router as possible
  2. Ensure your device is connected to your 5GHz "5G" WiFi - if it cannot see this connection, please try a newer or more "advanced" device
  3. On your device open a web browser such as Google Chrome and navigate to "Speedtest by Ookla" OR download and open the "Speedtest by Ookla" app
  4. Ensure that no other device is running any downloads/uploads in the background to ensure the best results
  5. Click the ‘Go’ button and wait for the results to be shown on the device

2.4GHz WiFi Speed Test

Your 2.4GHz WiFi (standard WiFi name without "5G") is capable of delivering slower speeds over a wide range. While you will not see the full speeds for your package on this, it is good to determine what speeds you do get to ensure this is working correctly.

To carry out a 2.4GHz WiFi speed test:

  1. Pick up your mobile phone/tablet/laptop and get as close to your router as possible
  2. Ensure your device is connected to your 2.4GHz WiFi
