Testing Your Wireless Speed

Testing Your Wireless Speeds

This guide outlines how to test the speed of your connection.

We recommend testing on multiple devices via multiple connection methods as both factors can affect the results of a speed test. The more results you have to compare, the better you can understand your connection's speeds.

Before undertaking a speed test, please ensure you are connecting directly to your router and that any third-party extenders or other routers are switched off.

We have found the most accurate speed test to be Speedtest by Ookla (app available for mobile devices) and we recommend using this if possible.

Please note that speed test results can be affected by the capabilities of the device and means of connection in use.

Devices may have different limitations depending on their networking hardware and age; Ethernet cables similarly have certain limits, and Wi-Fi connections can be affected by interference from other electronic devices.

Hardwired Speed Test

A hardwired test can provide the most accurate results providing your device and Ethernet cable can reach the speeds for your package.

To carry out a hardwired speed test:

  1. Use your desktop/laptop device and connect an Ethernet cable from your device to a yellow port on the back of your router
  1. Ensure your device is not using a Wi-Fi connection as opposed to the Ethernet connection
  1. On your device open a web browser such as Google Chrome and navigate to "Speedtest by Ookla"
  1. Ensure that no other device is running any downloads/uploads in the background to ensure the best results
  1. Click the "Go" button and wait for the results to be shown on the device

Wi-Fi Testing

A Wi-Fi test can be run on multiple devices such as mobile phone, tablet or laptop.

  1. Pick up the device of your choice and refer to the device’s Wi-Fi settings to make sure you are connected to your County Broadband Wi-Fi network (Example: CountyBB-12345)
  1. On your device, open a web browser such as Google Chrome / Safari / Firefox and navigate to "Speedtest by Ookla".
  1. Ensure that no other device is running any downloads/uploads in the background to ensure the best results.
  1. Click the "Go" button and wait for the results to be shown on the device.
