Online Gaming FAQ

Your gaming experience will be significantly better with full fibre – lower latency and faster downloads. However here are some hints and tips about how to make the most of your hyperfast broadband connection for gaming.

How to get the best connection for your gaming console.

There are several aspects to consider:

  • Using a wired connection: using a wired “Ethernet” connection between your console and the broadband router will give you the fastest connection.
  • Move closer if you’re using wireless: position the console as close as possible to the wireless router or consider using one of our Smart WiFi Extenders to create a Smart WiFi “mesh” network in your home. Reducing the distance between your device and the router will improve signal strength and reduce the likelihood of interference. There are several external factors that can contribute to a disrupted connection between your gaming device and your County Broadband router. Objects like furniture, walls and electrical devices can cause interference.
  • Your download speed: if you’re downloading games, you’ll benefit from the fast speeds available from the County Broadband full fibre network – up to 900Mbps in both directions. Just contact the County Broadband sales team if you want to upgrade your speed at any point in your contract.
  • Your upload speed, for multi-player games: your County Broadband full fibre connection has the same hyperfast speeds in both directions.
  • MTU: you need a minimum of 1384 MTU to play games. As standard, the County Broadband full fibre network has an 1450.
  • Latency: our full fibre network has very low latency (the delay in delivering data packets)
  • NAT: you should have a Moderate or Open NAT type.
  • UPnP: ensure this is enabled to ensure that “port mapping” can take place.
  • QoS: you can tag your console for high priority traffic using the My CB WiFi app to ensure that traffic to and from your console takes priority over other traffic on your home network.

Do you have enough speed?

Downloading an online game is much faster with a full fibre connection.

As an example, Call of Duty: Warzone is estimated to have an update size of about 57 GB. It will take about 1.3 hours at 100 Mbps, or 5.78 hours at 22 Mbps, or 63.3 hours at 2 Mbps

Indicative download times of a 100GB game over our full fibre network are:

  • 100mbps – 2 Hours, 13 minutes.
  • 200mbps – 1 Hour, 6 minutes.
  • 300mbps - 44 minutes.
  • 600mbps - 22 minutes.
  • 900mbps – 14 minutes.

Please note that these speeds can vary depending on the activity of your internal network, and is subject to users’ internal network usage. Where multiple downloads occur at once, this may impact the rates quoted above.
